Description
This divot tool is made from the tusk of a Wooly Mammoth (Mammuthus Primigenius) found in the Alaskan Tundra. Since Wooly Mammoths became extinct over 10,000 years ago, this material is at least that old, but given the region it was discovered, it is thought to be closer to 20,000-28,000 years old.

Running throughout this piece you'll see a criss-crossed pattern of lines. When held to the light at different angles they'll seem to appear and disappear like a holographic image. They are called Schreger Lines, named after Bernhard Schreger who first wrote about them in 1800.

Mammoth and Elephant tusks grow from the center outward, increasing in size as two intersecting layers of dentine spiral in opposite directions, building layer upon layer in a process that continues for the life of the animal. The two cone-shaped layers interlock with each other, giving the tusks extraordinary resistance to breakage and forming the tell-tale rhombic structures. These diamond-shaped patterns are present only in Mammoth and Elephant ivory and are the first thing experts look for when trying to identify real ivory from fake.

The material for this particular tool came from the interior portion of a tusk where it was protected from the elements. It has been stained various coffee hues by mineral intrusion from the surrounding soil but its strength has not been compromised. Of all the materials I use this probably ranks at the top in terms of strength/weight ratio and resistance to breakage by bending. It allows me to make delicate looking tools, like this, that I can still guarantee will last the lifetime of its owner. Dimensions are 2-3/4" long and just under 3/4" wide. The cigar cradle is just under 3/4" long, 9/16" wide and 1/8" deep, suitable for a Corona's or Lonsdale up to ring gauge 46. Weight is 7.71 grams.

This tool has been designed to be used with a pushing motion as opposed to a lifting motion. Research performed at Kansas State University has shown that repairing pitch marks using a pushing motion is much kinder to the sod's root system, enabling greens to heal faster and is recommended by the Golf Course Superintendents Association.
