Description
This ball marker is made from a very weathered piece of Mammoth tusk. In the pictures I have included a photo of the piece of tusk this marker was made from. You can see that the original piece was not perfectly round but had an unusual hump in the middle. This is due to the pressures of being buried and frozen in the Alaskan tundra for over 10,000 years and at some point in time this layer of tusk delaminated and began to deform. In making the ball marker I left the top and bottom intact, only cutting enough material to form the circle. This one was made from the right portion of the tusk as seen in the photo.

All along the edges of this ball marker you can clearly see a series of cross-hatched lines known as Schreger Lines, named after Bernhard Schreger who first identified them in 1800. These lines are unique to Mammoth and Elephant tusk and are one of the main ways to tell real ivory from fake. They are formed as successive, cone-shaped layers of ivory overlap as the tusk grows.
